There is a free walking tour – Capital Culture Walking Tour – with I’m Free Walking Tours that starts at the State Library of Victoria and runs for 1.5 hours through the lanes. Visit ACDC Lane, Postal Lane, Hosier Lane and more during your tour. Tour departs 3 pm daily – rain, hail or shine.

It is a free walking tour, but they do encourage tips for the local guides. You pay what you think it is worth.

If street art is not your thing, take their Melbourne Sights Free Walking Tour that departs at 10.30 from the State Library of Victoria daily, rain, hail or shine. You will have a fun time learning so much about Melbourne’s history, sights and best places to go. Enjoy wandering through Chinatown, Melbourne’s lanes, Carlton Gardens, past the Princess Theatre, Flinders Street Station, the Yarra and more.

Melbourne’s Historic City Tram

The City Circle Tram #35 is a free hop-on on hop-off service that runs clockwise around the city in a heritage W Class tram. It runs every 12-30 minutes in peak/off-peak hours. There is audio commentary on board. For more details of the stops and sights, click here.

Explore the City’s Free Museums & Galleries

The State Library of Victoria runs free tours – dates and times here. Learn about the historical reading rooms, the artworks and see Ned Kelly’s armour on display. The building is impressive and definitely worth the one-hour visit.

This is a favourite of ours whenever we visit Melbourne. It is the largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere. Our favourite part is the deli section with its cheeses, olives, pastries, breads, coffees and more. There are speciality shops that open from 9 am on the day that the market is open.

St Kilda Sunday Market

The St Kilda Sunday Market is held every Sunday except in February when the St Kilda Festival is on. Whilst you are there you can visit Luna Park – fun entertainment for all the family, but this is a paid activity.

Address: Upper Esplanade, St Kilda

Hours: 10 am to 4 pm

How to get there: it is a 15-minute ride from the city on tram 16 or 96. You will need to purchase a Myki Card as you are travelling outside the CBD area.

There are souvenir shops, arts and crafts, wealth and well-being, food and more.

After the market, head down the beach for a range of cafes and bars.
