Planning a stay in Sydney and wondering where to stay in the CBD?
Sydney’s city centre is one of the best places to base yourself — close to iconic landmarks, world-class dining, shopping and easy transport. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend getaway or a longer stay, choosing the right hotel can make all the difference.

Here are some of the best hotels in Sydney CBD, perfect for a comfortable and memorable stay.
We stayed at the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth on the 25th December (Christmas Night), and then we moved to the Swissotel Sydney for the night of the 26th December (Boxing Day night). We had never stayed in the city over Christmas and thought it would be fun to compare the two Accor hotels and to feel the buzz in the city during this time.

Best Hotels in Sydney CBD (Quick Guide)
- Sofitel Sydney Wentworth – best for classic luxury and heritage style
- Swissotel Sydney – best for central location and modern comfort
Sofitel Sydney Wentworth

- Best for: Luxury stays with a timeless, elegant feel
- Location: Sydney CBD (close to Circular Quay)
- Style: Classic luxury with French-inspired design
The Sofitel Sydney Wentworth is one of Sydney’s most iconic hotels, offering a refined and elegant stay right in the heart of the city. With its grand interiors and heritage charm, it’s ideal for travellers looking for a more traditional luxury experience.

Located within easy walking distance of Circular Quay, The Rocks and the Sydney Opera House, it’s perfectly positioned for sightseeing while still offering a peaceful retreat from the busy city streets.
Why we love it:
- Prime location near Sydney’s top attractions – we were heading to Circular Quay to board a Tall Ship for the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
- Elegant interiors and classic style
- Ideal for a special occasion or luxury city break
- We loved the Executive Lounge for afternoon tea, evening canapes and cocktails. The evening canapes actually turned out to be a full Christmas dinner with roast meats, vegetables and all the Christmas trimmings that you could ask for. In fact, if we had known, we would have eaten there as the restaurant that we booked at Darling Harbour was ok but not memorable.
- We chose to eat breakfast at Delta Rue instead of the Executive Lounge, as there were more choices.

Swissotel Sydney

- Best for: A central stay with modern comfort and convenience
- Location: Sydney CBD (Town Hall/shopping district)
- Style: Contemporary hotel with spacious rooms
Swissotel Sydney is a fantastic option if you want to be right in the centre of everything. Located above Pitt Street Mall, it offers direct access to shopping, dining and public transport, making it an excellent base for exploring the city.
The hotel combines comfort and convenience with modern amenities, making it ideal for both short stays and longer visits.

Why we love it:
- Extremely central location
- Easy access to shops, restaurants and transport
- Comfortable, spacious rooms
- The Executive Lounge was available to us as Platinum Members, but it was extremely busy on the night of the 26th December.
- We enjoyed a substantial buffet breakfast at their Ten Stories Restaurant.
